NMR Signal Splitting - Online Organic Chemistry Tutor

In NMR, the electric field is applied to the sample and nearby protons align themselves to the applied field in the same or different way. Splitting occurs only between protons of the same carbon that are not chemically equal to each other. The two magnetic fields felt by the proton due to which the proton is absorbed at two frequencies leads to the separation of the two signals in NMR.

Distribution occurs in certain patterns and there are certain rules for distribution:

  • In NMR spectra, the splitting pattern is usually shown in organic compounds.
  • Only non-equivalent protons can split each other’s signals but that is not possible in equivalent protons.
  • The non-equivalent proton splits the signal of adjacent protons into ‘n+1’.
  • Splitting occurs only on the proton of the adjacent carbon or the non-equal proton of the same carbon.
